CHAPTER 8
âI think we ought to go in,â said McPhee.
âThereâs no real evidence,â Garvin objected. âNothing to link him with the grenades.â
âThereâs plenty to link him with other stuff.â
âPlenty?â
âThat sergeant said it was a recognized route. Theyâve been using that chap for years.â
âIf what the sergeant says is true,â said Garvin, âand we know him to be a liar.â
âHe wasnât lying this time,â said Owen.
âItâs the lead we wanted,â said McPhee. âWhat are we waiting for?â
âWeâre waiting for something real,â said Garvin.
âIsnât the box something real?â
âThere are boxes going in and out of that place all the time.â
âAli says he knows those and it wasnât one of them,â said Owen. âHow can he know all the boxes? What about a new supplier?â âHe was sure.â
âMight be anything,â said Garvin dismissively. âA new hat for his wife, goods for the shop. We canât go in just on the word of a street beggar.â
âAnd of a sergeant,â said McPhee.
âA convicted criminal. Lying to save his skin.â
âNot to save his skin,â Owen pointed out.
âAll right, then,â said Garvin. âLying because heâs been terrified out of his wits. And thatâs something else I want to speak to you about.â
âWe wouldnât have found out any other way,â said McPhee loyally, and bore without flinching the look Garvin gave him.
âThe question is,â said Garvin, ânow that weâve got some real information-â
Owen did not like the way Garvin kept emphasizing the word ârealâ today.
â-how do we use it? Wouldnât it be best simply to put a man on the shop and keep it under surveillance?â
âWe donât have the time,â said Owen. âThe Carpetâs next week.â âSuppose the grenades are still on their way?â asked Garvin. âSuppose they havenât got there yet? Donât we just scare whoever-it-is off?â
âSuppose theyâve already passed through?â said Owen.
âWell,â said Garvin, âin that case weâve lost them already. Going in wouldnât help.â
âWe might pick up something,â said McPhee.
âAnd at least weâd know,â said Owen.
âSuppose theyâre there all the time,â said McPhee, â while weâre mucking around.â
âAnd suppose theyâll soon be not there,â added Owen, â if we go on mucking around. Boxes come out as well as go in.â
âYes,â said Garvin. âIâll admit thatâs a worry.â
He rested his chin on his hand and thought.
âAll the same,â he said, âitâs not much to go on. If it wasnât grenades I wouldnât look at it.â
âBut it is grenades,â said McPhee, âand the Carpet is next week.â âWe donât know-â Garvin began, and then stopped. He thought for a little longer and then he looked at Owen.
âOK,â he said, âyou can go in. But on your head be it.â
It was a typical Garvin ending and Owen wanted to ask what he meant, though he had an uneasy feeling that he knew what was meant. McPhee, however, was pleased.
âGood, sir,â he said. âWhen?â
âThis afternoon,â said Owen, â when everybodyâs asleep.â
âNot tonight?â asked Garvin.
âYou can see better in the day,â said Owen.
Garvin shrugged.
âAll right, then,â he said. âOnly yotiâll have to move fast. Heâs a Syrian and heâll have someone round from the consulate in a flash of lightning.
